Why Are My Eyelashes Falling Out?

Why Are My Eyelashes Falling Out?

THE HUMAN EYE HAS BETWEEN 90 AND 150 EYELASHES, DEPENDING ON THE INDIVIDUAL. AS WELL AS FRAMING OUR EYES, AND CREATING THE FOUNDATION FOR US TO CREATE A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT LOOKS, EYELASHES PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN PROTECTING OUR EYES FROM EVERYTHING FROM DUST, LIQUIDS AND GENERAL DEBRIS. SO WHY ARE YOUR EYELASHES FALLING OUT?

Fortunately, getting eyelash extensions or having a lash lifting treatment does not interfere with the condition of your lashes, and when maintained and looked after correctly according to guidelines suggested by your technician, they will remain strong and healthy.

Here at Nouveau lashes, we train our technicians to carefully asses each client’s eyelashes, considering the thickness, condition and desired look, as this will depend on the weight and length of the lashes to be applied. Our exclusive application method concentrates on a ‘weight for weight’ system, meaning each lash is able to support the weight of the extensions.

Nouveau technicians use the ‘classic’ method of applying one extension to each lash for a natural set, or a ‘fanning’ technique, which gives extra volume and thickness (Russian style!) This means you are guaranteed to achieve your desired look without compromising on the health or condition of your lashes.

We understand that it could spark concern to wake up after undergoing a lash treatment to find an eyelash on your pillow, or to notice them falling our sporadically throughout your day-to-day life, but this is completely natural and is absolutely nothing to worry about.

Unlike the hair on our head, which tends to stop, or rapidly reduce its rate of growth once it reaches a certain length, the more delicate nature of the eyelash means they fall out once they reach a certain stage in their life cycle. This can take up to 22 weeks, when they are at a length of around 9-10mm. Of course, each individual eyelash is growing at a different rate, therefore the time frame will vary.

Therefore, it is important for us to understand their life cycle and know how to promote strong, healthy growth.

ANAGEN PHASE

Lasting between 30 and 45 days, the anagen phase is the most active stage of the lash life cycle. The hair follicle is connected to the bloody supply which nurtures the eyelash to grow until it reaches its full length. Naturally our eyelashes are all growing at different rates, but around 40% are in the anagen phase at any one time.

CATAGEN PHASE

The hair follicle disconnects from the blood supply and enters the ‘transition’ phase. In the process of disconnecting, the hair shrinks and is pushed upwards, creating the illusion of further growth. The catagen stage can take up to three weeks, and around 20% of eyelashes are simultaneously in this phase of the cycle.

TELOGEN PHASE

With no connection to an active blood supply, the follicle is dormant, which is why the final stage of the cycle is referred to as the ‘resting’ phase. Approximately 40% of eyelashes are in the telogen stage at any one time, however each lash can take up to 14 weeks to fall out, and a new hair follicle to start growing in its place.

Alongside the natural lash cycle making us lose lashes on an almost daily basis, the are numerous other factors that contribute to our eyelashes shedding such as alopecia, hyperthyroidism, hay fever and other allergies, using eyelash curlers and waterproof mascara. If you have had lash extensions applied and start to notice slight gaps between the hair follicles over a period of time, our Lash Extension Remover is the perfect way to comfortably and efficiently remove the lashes, whilst conditioning your natural lashes.

To ensure your eyelashes remain in optimal health, use our Lash and Brow Conditioning Serum as part of your evening skincare routine. The hypoallergenic formula is suitable to use with extensions packed full of nourishing goodness which protects from pollutants and promotes growth, strength and can even be used as a primer.
